Winter 2001 -2002 Death Count (Buffalo
Captured & Slaughtered)
November 11/28/01: One bull is shot at Red Canyon without being tested for brucellosis.
December 12/6/01: Two
bulls are captured at Duck Creek; ten are hazed from Horse Butte to the park. 12/7/01: Both bulls are slaughtered.
12/18/01: Two bulls are captured at
Duck Creek. 12/19/01: Four bulls are captured at Horse Butte. 12/20/01: Four bulls sent to slaughter.
January 1/8/02: Six bulls
are captured at Horse Butte. All six are slaughtered.
1/9/02: Seven bulls are captured at
Horse Butte; four are slaughtered. Helicopter used for first time this winter.
1/16/02: Two bull bison are captured.
1/17/02: Two bull bison are captured with helicopter. 1/18/02: Two bull bison are sent to slaughter.
February 2/06/02: Three
bull bison are captured at Horse Butte. Two are sent to slaughter.
2/24/02: Nine buffalo are captured,
including pregnant cows and yearling calves. 2/26/02: Five buffalo (three cows and two young bulls) are slaughtered.
Three buffalo (two yearling calves and a pregnant cow) are released on Horse Butte.
March - 4 sent to slaughter
April 3 - 15 buffalo captured
- 6 killed
April 10 - 20 buffalo captured
- 7 slaughtered
April 17 - 200 buffalo out of
the Park - 21 slaughtered
April 25th - 32 buffalo sent to slaughter; 1 shot due to abuse in capture facility; 1 wild mom forced to give birth while in captivity
April 29th - 72 buffalo Killed
- none tested
May 22 - 29 bulls slaughtered
- none tested
June 6 - 2 buffalo shot in field

Inc. and Cold Mountain, Cold River's petition for a writ of mandamus was heard in Helena before Montana's First Judicial District
Court Judge Honzel. This legal action was taken against the Montana Dept. of Livestock for violating our constitutional Right-to-Know.
Since early this year, our efforts to inspect and copy public records held by the livestock agency on their bison management

" The so-called random shooting
at the Montana borders is actually eliminating or depleting entire maternal lineages, therefore this action will cause an
irreversible crippling of the gene pool. Continued removal of genetic lineages will change the genetic makeup of the herd,
thus it will not represent the animal of 1910 or earlier. It would be a travesty to have people look back and say we were
"idiots" for not understanding the gene pool." Bison have developed a natural resistance genetically as long as thay have
enough to eat, limited stress and are not consumed by other disease. There is no magic bullet in wildlife disease, Therefore
management is important. Vaccines are one management tool and one component, but genetic structure is neccessary for future
management. Every animal which is removed from the breeding population can no longer contribute to the genetic variability
of the herd." Remarks made by Dr. Joe Templeton, Texas A& M University, Dept. of Veterinary Pathobiology, to the
